  • How do I keep a hole open in the ice for the winter?

A hole should be kept open in the ice during winter so that gasses built up in the pond from rotting plants and leaves can escape. If trapped in the pond, they can cause damage to fish by creating toxic levels of gases. The easiest and simplest way to create a hole is by using a pond de-icer. Just plug in the de-icer and insert it in your pond. This must be put in place before the pond freezes. Ask a friendly associate to show one to you the next time you stop by the store.
  • In the winter, fish go through a period of semi-dormancy. They begin preparing for it by slowing down their systems when autumn approaches. Their digestive and immune systems slow down and they are no longer able to digest the same foods they could during warmer months. Koi are especially susceptible since they have no stomach to aid in digestion.

When the water starts to cool into the upper 50’s, start slowing down on feeding by feeding small amounts of low protein food a few times a week. Stop feeding your fish when the water temperature reaches 50.
